Prof. Rumki Basu recently delivered the Keynote Address at the prestigious National Conference on “Democratic Governance in India in a Neoliberal World,” organized by the V. K. Sukumaran Nayar Chair for Parliamentary Affairs under the Department of Political Science at the University of Kerala. Held from March 27 to 29, 2026, the conference provided a platform for enriching deliberations on critical themes, including federalism in transition, digital public infrastructure, marginalization, and the evolving nature of democratic participation.
The event featured a distinguished lineup of speakers who contributed diverse perspectives on governance. Smt. Sarada Muraleedharan IAS (Rtd.), former Chief Secretary to the Government of Kerala, offered invaluable insights into equity within the Kerala Development Model. Prof. S. Y. Surendra Kumar of Bangalore University also delivered a compelling lecture on India’s quest for smart governance. In addition to her keynote, Prof. Basu had the distinct pleasure of chairing Prof. Kumar’s special lecture on the second day, which fostered a dynamic and thought-provoking exchange of ideas among the participants.
The Institute of Social Sciences was also well-represented during the technical sessions. Aan Mary Suresh, Research Associate to Prof. Basu, presented her paper titled “Muscular Nationalism and Neoliberal Aesthetics: Redefining Citizenship among University Students.” Her work was featured in a vital session focusing on the reconfiguration of democratic governance and majoritarianism in neoliberal India.
Prof. Basu expressed her sincere gratitude to Dr. Nithya N. R., Hon. Director of the V. K. Sukumaran Nayar Chair, and Prof. Josukutty C. A., Head of the Department of Political Science, for their warm invitation and hospitality. She further extended her appreciation to the entire department and the vibrant student community. The success of the event was a testament to their meticulous organization and intellectual energy, making the engagement with such bright, inquisitive minds a significant highlight of the academic gathering.
